What to Expect After Implant Surgery

Recovery Is Usually Easier Than Expected

Dental implant surgery has a reputation for being a bigger ordeal than it actually is. For most patients, recovery is comparable to having a tooth extracted — some swelling and mild discomfort, manageable with the right aftercare, and a clear timeline back to normal.

The First 24–48 Hours

Expect some swelling and minor bleeding in the first day or two — this is completely normal. Stick to soft foods, avoid hot liquids and vigorous rinsing on the first day, and use an ice pack in short intervals to keep swelling down. Any prescribed pain medication or antibiotics should be taken exactly as directed.

The First Week

Mild tenderness typically fades within 5–7 days. Continue favoring soft, non-crunchy foods, keep the surgical site clean with gentle rinsing (we'll give you exact instructions), and avoid smoking, which can significantly slow healing. Most patients are back to their normal routine — work included — within 2–3 days.

The Months That Follow

The implant needs time — usually 2 to 6 months — to fuse fully with the jawbone before the final crown is attached. During this period you'll have a few short follow-up visits so we can confirm healing is on track. Once the crown is placed, you can treat the implant just like a natural tooth: brush, floss, and visit us for regular checkups.

When to Call Us

Mild swelling and soreness are expected — but severe pain, heavy bleeding that doesn't subside, or a fever are not, and should prompt a call to our office right away. When in doubt, it's always better to check in with us than to wait it out.
